Walter Moras (born January 20, 1856 in Rixdorf , † March 6, 1925 in Harzburg ) was a German painter.

Life

His development was largely shaped by the well-known marine and landscape painter Hermann Eschke , in whose studio he received his training. In 1876 he exhibited for the first time at the exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. Until 1910, with a few exceptions, it was continuously represented at the major Berlin art exhibitions. He also participated several times in the exhibitions of the Bremer Kunstverein , the Oldenburger Kunstverein , the Königsberger Kunstverein and was present at the JA in Munich in 1890.

On the recommendation of his teacher Hermann Eschke, Walter Moras painted at a young age mainly on the island of Rügen and in Mecklenburg . He toured Norway , Italy , Holland . Many of his pictures were taken in the Brandenburg area around Berlin and later in the Spreewald . He was one of the natural landscape painters, whose work coincided with the heyday of open-air painting . He hardly painted in Berlin, although he remained a Berliner throughout his life and is referred to as a “Berlin painter” by art history.

His painting style is realistic, marked by a touch of melancholy, mostly simple and cultivated. Occasionally, impressionistic influences can be found in his atmospheric poetic pictures. In later years he created large-format autumn pictures that captivate with their warm colors. The same applies to his winter landscapes, which are very carefully composed and have particularly subtle tints in the snow. Walter Moras' paintings are still popular today and are repeatedly traded at art auctions.

Walter Moras was not a member of the Berlin Artists' Association . He also did not join any North German artists' colony, although he was painting in their fields at the same time. In 1882 he married Ida Baluschek, the daughter of a Berlin railway engineer. From the marriage, Otto Max Bruno Moras (born October 14, 1883 in Berlin; † March 13, 1939 there) emerged. He also became a painter, but could not step out of his father's shadow.
