The Kulturhistorisches Museum Magdeburg (KHM) is a museum in Magdeburg that was founded in 1906 and held Council of Europe exhibitions in 2001 and 2006 .

history

After various previous institutions, the Magdeburg Cultural History Museum was founded in 1906 as the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum. The first director of the museum was the art historian Theodor Volbehr . After numerous private gifts and purchases from Europe, the National Socialists tried to remove unpleasant objects from 1933 onwards before further inventory losses and destruction occurred in 1945. Due to new discoveries there were again many newcomers.

The museum building, which was badly damaged in the Second World War , has since been largely rebuilt and extensively restored. The highlights include the Council of Europe exhibitions Otto the Great - Magdeburg and Europe and the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation as well as the exhibition Magdeburg 1200 - Medieval Metropolis, Prussian Fortress, State Capital .

building

Museum building in its original state

The museum building is located at Otto-von-Guericke-Straße 68-73, just a few meters from Magdeburg Cathedral . It was built from 1901 to 1906 as the municipal museum for arts and crafts under the name "Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum". The executed design was indirectly derived from an architectural competition held in 1897 and came from the Viennese architects Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein .

Kaiser Otto Hall

The original statue of the Magdeburg rider , the three-part wall painting Scenes from the Life of Otto the Great by Arthur Kampf from 1905/06 and the Ottonian crypt discovered in 2005 are on display in the Kaiser Otto Hall .

business

The cultural history museum employs 27 people. It is managed by Gabriele Köster . The museum operates a museum and an online shop. A special feature of the offer is the Magdeburg rider from Playmobil , with which the toy manufacturer recreated a work of art for the first time and thus also advertises a city. Megedeborch is a museum educational drama in which historical events from Magdeburg are presented.
