Matthias Puhle (born February 22, 1955 in Braunschweig ) is a German historian and cultural advisor for the city of Magdeburg .

After graduating from high school in Salzgitter-Bad in 1974 , Matthias Puhle studied history, German studies, philosophy and education at the TU Braunschweig from 1974 to 1979 . In 1984 he received his doctorate under Norbert Kamp on the subject of the politics of the city of Braunschweig within the Saxon city union and the Hanseatic League in the late Middle Ages . From 1980 he worked as a research assistant and from 1985 as curator at the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig . From October 1, 1991 to 2012, he was chief museum director of the Magdeburg museums and director of the Magdeburg Museum of Cultural History . Since 2000, Puhle has been chairman of the Saxony-Anhalt Museum Association. In October 2002, Puhle received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon from the Federal President for his scientific exhibition work, especially for the 2001 Council of Europe exhibition "Otto the Great, Magdeburg and Europe". In 2004 he was appointed honorary professor at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . From 2007 to 2012 he was a board member of the “Stiftung Schloß Wernigerode”.

In 2009 he was offered the direction of both the municipal and state museums in Braunschweig , which he turned down. From 2012 to 2014 Puhle was head of department in the Ministry of Culture in Saxony-Anhalt. On May 22nd, 2014, he was elected by the Magdeburg City Council as an alderman for culture, school and sport with 81% of the vote . He took up this position as head of the city's cultural department on November 1, 2014.
