Friedrich Ohmann (born December 21, 1858 in Lemberg , Galicia , Austria-Hungary , † April 6, 1927 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Friedrich Ohmann was born in Lemberg in 1858 as the son of a building councilor . In 1877 he began studying architecture at the Vienna University of Technology . His teachers included Heinrich von Ferstel and Karl König . In order to deepen his artistic training, he then enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts with Friedrich von Schmidt .

From 1889 to 1899 he worked as a professor of decorative architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and carried out many restoration projects in this city. In 1898, together with Josef Hackhofer , he designed all of the buildings and bridges in the area of the Vienna river regulation in Vienna (see Vienna Vienna river bridges ) and returned to Vienna on the occasion of this commission.

From 1899–1907 he was the artistic director of the Hofburg building ( Neue Burg ) in Vienna. The projects he carried out include the new palm house in the Burggarten and the Empress Elisabeth monument in the Volksgarten (statue by Hans Bitterlich ).

From 1904 on he was head of the master class for architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Ohmann's roots lie in late historicism . His profound knowledge of historical architectural styles served as the basis of his work. In his Prague years he was the protagonist of a moderate Art Nouveau and later, above all, a pioneer of neo-baroque . It is not uncommon for his work to show a mixture of these two styles, for example in the palm house in Vienna's Burggarten.

In the summer of 1918 Ohmann presented the first drafts for a large Kaiser Franz Josef monument, which he believed should be built in front of the Vienna Votive Church in spatial connection with it. His project was not pursued after the end of the war in autumn 1918.

His grave, dedicated by the Viennese city administration , is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 33E, row 3, grave 32); His son-in-law, the architect Hans Pfann (1890–1973), was also buried here. In 1938 the Ohmanngasse in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after him.
