The Kurhaus Merano , built partly in the 19th and partly in the early 20th century, is an outstanding example of spa architecture in the South Tyrolean city of Merano . The completion of the Kurhaus on the Passer promenade marked the climax and conclusion of the transformation of Merano into a spa town . The building now serves as an event center.

history

The older wing of the Kurhaus was built by Josef Czerny from 1873 to 1874 according to plans by Ludwig Förster . As early as 1906 and 1907, two limited architectural competitions were held, the first for a renovation, the second for a new building for the Kurhaus. The participants in both competitions were selected according to unknown criteria and invited to participate. a. Wilhelm Kürschner , Marcel Kammerer , Max Langheinrich and Musch & Lun . It is not known why neither competition had a concrete result. It was not until 1912 that construction work began on the “New Kurhaus”, which was designed by Friedrich Ohmann , who had not taken part in the two earlier competitions. Under the supervision of the master builder Pietro Delugan , a new component was added to the old Kurhaus until 1914. The outbreak of the First World War prevented the planned demolition of the old building and the execution of a second construction phase in its place .

Building description

The older wing from the 19th century uses a historicist style inventory. Its central hall of mirrors is known today as the “Pavillon des Fleurs”.

The new wing, on the other hand, is an Art Nouveau building. The large entrance foyer is closed at the top by a dome . Towards the Passer promenade it is complemented by a convexly curved central risalit with columns and balconies as well as a sculpture of dancing girls standing above the triangular gable. The “Great Kursaal” consists of three aisles, of which the middle one is spanned by a barrel vault. The new wing is equipped with works by the painter Rudolf Jettmar , who decorated the building with creatures scattering flowers, female geniuses and the victory of the sun over winter.

use

The Kurhaus serves as a venue for concerts, congresses, conferences, balls and other events. The events that take place on a regular basis include, for example, the Meran WineFestival and the regional assembly of the South Tyrolean People's Party .

On September 5, 2012, Giorgio Napolitano and Heinz Fischer met for the award of the Great Order of Merit of the State of South Tyrol and subsequent consultations in the Kurhaus, which was the first time an Italian and Austrian president met on South Tyrolean soil. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the declaration of dispute settlement before the United Nations in 1992 , Sergio Mattarella and Alexander Van der Bellen once again visited the Kurhaus on June 11, 2017 .
