Disasters

  • 1667 : A severe earthquake causes almost all buildings to collapse in Dubrovnik , the capital of the republic of the same name , while the city walls withstand the force of nature. The mayor is among the more than 5000 fatalities.
  • 2009 : An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 to 6.2 on the Richter scale shakes central Italy. Many residents are buried by collapsing houses and 294 people die and 1,000 are injured. 55,000 people are homeless. The epicenter of the quake is near the city of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, northeast of Rome . The hundreds of aftershocks, some of them severe, continue for another eight days.
