Mission overview

One of the highlights of the shuttle mission was the repair of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite in orbit. With the Manned Maneuvering Units successfully tested on the previous flight , astronauts James van Hoften and George Nelson were able to fly to the satellite and, among other things, exchange the attitude control system there. Problems with capturing the satellite led to an additional orbit and the landing on Edwards Air Force Base instead of the Kennedy Space Center. The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) with a total of 57 experiments on board was also suspended so that a later shuttle mission could collect them again. The cinematic highlight of the mission was the IMAX camera, which was on board during the mission.

This mission was originally planned as STS-13 . However, the new numbering system for shuttle flights made it STS-41-C. Due to changes in the launch order, it was actually the eleventh, not the thirteenth, shuttle mission.
