Originally, Robert Stevenson provided as a second payload specialist. However, he resigned due to the illness of his wife from the team and was replaced by Scully-Power.

Mission overview

In the course of the mission, NASA's Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (cost 470 million dollars) was deployed to study geological movements on the earth's surface. In addition, many tests were carried out with new devices for earth observation in the hold of the space shuttle, including the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B). Furthermore, the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere was measured through earth observations and the use of the MAPS measuring device.

To practice the refueling of satellites with hydrazine fuel, found an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) with a duration of 3 h 30 min by Leestma and Sullivan instead. The latter became the first American woman in free space.

With Sally Ride, a woman flew twice into space for the first time, and Marc Garneau was also the first Canadian in space. For the first time, seven astronauts and two women were on the crew of a shuttle. McBride, Sullivan, Leestma, Garneau and Scully-Power were space newbies.

About forty heat tiles were damaged on re-entry, but this did not pose a threat to the orbiter or the crew.
