Mission overview

The start of the mission took place without any delay, the second time it started at night.

As part of the mission, three communications satellites were placed in orbit: MORELOS-B (Mexico), AUSSAT-2 (Australia) and SATCOM KU-2 . Another main goal were attempts to assemble construction elements in free space with a view to building the International Space Station ISS . This required two space missions totaling twelve hours and ten minutes. The IMAX camera was also carried on this mission .

The landing occurred one orbit earlier than planned at Edwards AFB in California. The shortening of the mission was decided at short notice due to the storm situation in the landing area; In addition, the space shuttle touched down on the concrete runway because the normally used natural runway in the dry lake was too wet. Atlantis was transported back to Cape Canaveral , Florida four days later by special aircraft.
