STS-51-C ( english S pace T ransportation S ystem ) is a mission designation for the US Space Shuttle Discovery ( OV -103) of NASA . The launch took place on January 24, 1985. It was the 15th space shuttle mission and the third flight of the space shuttle Discovery.

Payton and Wright did not belong to NASA, but were selected by the US Air Force as military payload specialists (Manned Spaceflight Engineers) for this flight.
Mission overview
STS-51-C was a military mission on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense .
According to the original plan, the mission should have been flown by the Shuttle Challenger . However, this was not yet available due to problems with the heat protection tiles.
Due to the cold weather, the start had to be postponed by one day.
The aim of the mission was to deploy the Magnum geostationary reconnaissance satellite over the Soviet Union. Details were kept confidential at the time.
