STS-95 ( english S pace T ransportation S ystem) is the mission designation for a flight of the US Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103) of NASA . The launch took place on October 29, 1998. It was the 92nd space shuttle mission and the 25th flight of the space shuttle Discovery.
team
Main team
- Curtis Brown (5th space flight), commander
- Steven Lindsey (2nd space flight), pilot
- Scott Parazynski (3rd spaceflight), mission specialist
- Stephen Robinson (2nd space flight), mission specialist
- Pedro Duque (1st Space Flight), Mission Specialist ( ESA / Spain )

John Glenn completed this mission at the age of 77 and has since held the record as the oldest person in orbit.
replacement
- Koichi Wakata ( NASDA / Japan ) supported Mukai, but officially there were no substitutes.
Mission description
The mission was all about astronomical and atmospheric research. For example, the SPARTAN 201 satellite was suspended for several days. It was used to research physical conditions and processes that take place in the solar corona and have an impact on the solar wind .
The HOST platform (HST Orbital Systems Test) was housed in the Discovery's cargo bay , which contained various devices that were to be installed in the Hubble space telescope during the next maintenance mission . Their space suitability was checked with HOST. This involved a new cooling system for the NICMOS camera, a 486 computer, an electronic data recording device without moving parts (solid state recorder) and a fiber optic cable .
Also in the cargo bay was the IEH-3 (International Extreme ultraviolet Hitchhiker) scientific complex, which consisted of six individual experiments. For example, examinations in the extreme ultraviolet range were carried out with the UVSTAR telescope , which were used to study the plasma of Jupiter , its moon Io and hot stars . In addition, extremely pure crystal films were made. During the mission, PANSAT (Petite Amateur Navy SATellite) was also launched, a small experimental satellite that was used to transmit data via amateur radio.
At 77, John Glenn holds the record as the oldest astronaut in orbit. With the Mercury Atlas 6 mission in 1962, he was the first American to go into orbit. During this shuttle flight, various experiments were carried out to find out the effects of weightlessness on old people.
In the SpaceHab and the middle deck, the crew completed a variety of interesting experiments in the fields of medicine , biology , microgravity , technology and earth exploration during the nine-day mission . The Discovery landed in Florida .
The start was broadcast live in HDTV for the first time , which also marked the start of this technology in the USA.
