Mission overview

The main load was the fifth data relay satellite in the TDRS ( Tracking and Data Relay Satellite ) series, which was suspended 6 hours and 13 minutes after launch. Later an IUS (Inertial Upper Stage) put it into its final orbit.

Further experiments on board were:

  • the Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS), which recorded data on X-rays from diffuse sources in space;
  • the Commercial General Bioprocessing Apparatus (CGPA)
  • the Chromosome and Plant Cell Division in Space Experiment (CHROMEX) to study plant growth;
  • the Physiological and Anatomical Rodent Experiment (PARE) to study the skeleton and its adaptation to weightlessness;
  • the Space Acceleration Measurement Equipment (SANS) to measure gravitational forces in near-Earth space;
  • the Solid Surface Combustion Experiment (SSCE) to measure the rate of spread and temperature of burning filter paper.

On the fifth day of the mission, Mario Runco and Greg Harbaugh conducted a nearly five-hour disembarkation in the open payload bay to gain more experience of working in space. They tested their range of motion, stepped into foot rests without the help of their hands and simulated the carrying of large objects.
