Mission description

During the eleven-day mission, the second multi-day free flight was carried out by the Wake Shield Facility (WSF), a saucer-shaped satellite that flies freely alongside the shuttle. An experiment was carried out in which a wafer-thin film was produced in the WSF in a perfect vacuum . In addition, the crew continued the astronomical satellite SPARTAN 201 and caught him again, led a six-hour spacewalk to test of assembly techniques for the International Space Station through and tested thermal improvements to the used space suits.

The free-flying SPARTAN 201 completed its third flight during this mission. The connection between the sun and the electricity it generates on charged particles ( solar wind ) was investigated. In particular, the outer atmosphere of the sun and the output of the solar wind from it were examined.

STS-69 also carried the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker (IEH-1), the first of five planned flights to measure and track the flux of the Sun-derived Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) and the EUV emissions of the plasma -Torus around Jupiter , which emanates from its moon Io .

The combined Capillary Pumped Loop-2 / Gas Bridge Assembly (CAPL-2 / GBA) experiment was also on board. It demonstrated a zero gravity cooling system intended for the Earth Observing System Program . The Thermal Energy Storage-2 (TES-2) experiment dealt with advanced energy techniques. In addition, there were several Get Away Special (GAS) experiments on board that explored different areas such as the interaction between the position of the spaceship and the orbit control system, rods filled with liquid for use as shock absorbers or the effects of a smoldering fire under weightlessness. It was also used to research the behavior of cavities in lithium fluoride and calcium fluoride , salts that can store thermal energy. The data from this experiment were used by the TESSIM project .

Another payload on board was the Electrolysis Performance Improvement Concept Study (EPICS), which was also related to the ISS . The replenishment of oxygen and hydrogen through electrolysis of water will play a major role in future space missions. The production of oxygen directly on the space station could reduce the annual consumption of supplies by 5,400 kg.

Other payloads on board were:

  • National Institutes of Health-Cells-4 (NIH-C4) , which studied bone loss during a space flight
  • Biological Research in Canister-6 (BRIC-6) investigated the gravitational recognition of mammalian cells
  • (CMIX-4) was a commercial experiment that investigated the influence of gravity on cells, in particular the development of neuromuscular disorders
  • Commercial Generic Bioprocessing Apparatus-7 (CGBA-7) , another commercial experiment that gathered data that was used for pharmacy, biomedicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and the environment in general.
