James H. Newman ( James Hansen Newman ; born October 16, 1956 on Truk in the Pacific Islands Trust Territory, now Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia ) is a former American astronaut .
Start of career
Newman graduated from La Jolla High School in San Diego , California , then studied physics at Dartmouth College and graduated with a bachelor's degree cum laude in 1978. His master and doctorate he made at the Rice University in 1982 respectively 1984. After graduating, he continued working at Rice University and from 1985 the way the Johnson Space Center of NASA .
NASA
In 1990 he was elected to NASA's 13th astronaut group. His specialty are portable computers for work in space and the preparation and follow-up work for the crew of a space flight.
STS-51
He completed his first space flight with the Discovery from September 12-22, 1993. His job was to work on the Shuttle Pallet Satellite and to test new aids and techniques for subsequent missions during outboard activities. The landing took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida .
STS-69
The Endeavor went into space from September 7th to 18th to test assembly techniques for the ISS . In the meantime, experiments were carried out to measure the intensity of the solar wind and to measure the extreme ultraviolet emissions of Jupiter's plasma toro, which emanate from its moon Io . The landing took place again in Florida.
STS-88
He flew again with the Endeavor from December 4th - 16th, 1998 in space, but this time he was involved in the inauguration mission of the ISS, because the space shuttle had the space station's first Unity connection module along with two coupling adapters (PMA-1 and PMA-2) in the hold. Here Newman was in demand as a mission expert, because he had tried out the assembly techniques in weightlessness on the previous flights. The landing in Florida also took place on this mission.
STS-109
He made his fourth flight from March 1 to 12, 2002 with the Columbia to the Hubble Space Telescope . During this mission maintenance work was carried out, including the replacement of the control system and the solar panels. Again they landed in Florida.
