The main payload, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), was launched on the third day of flight ( MET 2/05: 12). The 6.5 ton satellite carried out one of the most detailed studies of the earth's atmosphere and explored the troposphere as part of the international mission to planet earth and measured a. Ozone concentration, wind speeds as well as solar and interstellar radiation.

Other shuttle payloads were: Ascent Particle Monitor (APM); Middeck 0-Gravity Dynamics Experiment (MODE); Shuttle Activation Monitor (SAM); Cosmic Ray Effects and Activation Monitor (CREAM); Physiological and Anatomical Rodent Experiment (PARE); Protein Crystal Growth II-2 (PCG II-2); Investigations into Polymer Membrane Processing (IPMP) and the Air Force Maui Optical Site (AMOS) experiment.

The landing took place on September 18 at 7:38 a.m. UTC on runway 22 at Edwards Air Force Base , California . It was the fifth night landing of the shuttle space program. The landing was originally planned at the Kennedy Space Center, but has been moved to Edwards due to bad weather. The orbiter returned to Florida on September 26th. The landing weight was 87,444 kg.
