Chiaki Mukai ( Japanese 向 井 千秋 , Mukai Chiaki ; born May 6, 1952 in Tatebayashi , Japan ) is a Japanese astronaut . She was born as Chiaki Naitō ( 内藤 千秋 , Naitō Chiaki ).

education

Mukai graduated from the Keiō girls' high school in Mita, Minato in 1971 , then studied at the Keiō University , graduated in 1977 with a doctorate from this study and received her doctorate there in 1988 in physiology . From 1977 to 1985 she worked as a doctor in various Japanese clinics.

JAXA

In 1985 she became the first woman to be selected as a Japanese astronaut. She was trained as a payload specialist at the Johnson Space Center from 1987 to 1989. She was also one of three Japanese candidates for the STS-47 mission , she was the replacement payload specialist for the STS-90 and the deputy mission specialist for the STS-107 .

STS-65

Mukai experienced her first and longest space flight with the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1994.

The Spacelab was on board again for this mission. This contained various experiments to study microgravity on molten metal and living organisms. On the German side, there were the experimental systems TEMPUS (non-contact melting furnace) and NIZEMI (low-speed centrifuge microscope), which were used to determine the point at which these organisms react to gravity in a wide variety of organisms ( cress seeds , slime molds , paramecia ). There was also a measuring system to measure even the smallest gravitational fluctuations and an aquarium with fish.

STS-95

She made her last space flight so far in 1998 with the Discovery , again in the role of payload specialist.

The mission was all about astronomical and atmospheric research. For example, the SPARTAN 201 satellite was suspended for several days. It was used to research physical conditions and processes that take place in the solar corona and have an impact on the solar wind.

The flight was commanded by Curtis Brown and the second payload specialist besides her was NASA legend John Glenn at the old age of 77. John Glenn took part in this flight in his old age to carry out various experiments with Mukai, which were supposed to investigate the effects of weightlessness on old people.
