Minato ( Japanese 港区 , - ku , dt. "Port") is one of the 23 districts of Tokyo Prefecture . It is located in the southern center of Tokyo , the capital of Japan .
history
The district was founded on March 3, 1947 through the merger of the former Akasaka , Azabu and Shiba districts of Tokyo , which was dissolved in 1943 .
Attractions
- The Tokyo Tower , one of the landmarks of Tokyo, is located in the district.
- Odaiba on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay with a beach and entertainment district

- The Atago Shrine ( 愛 宕 神社 , Atago Shrine ) is located on the highest hill in the boroughs at 26 m.
- The Sengaku-ji ( 泉 岳 寺 ) houses the tombs of the 47 Rōnin .
- The Zojo houses the tombs of six Tokugawa - Shoguns . The graves of Hidetada , the monument to his wife Sūgen'in , the graves of Ienobu and Ietsugu were national treasures until their destruction in World War II, and parts of two are now recognized as important cultural assets.
- Tokyo Midtown , high-rise complex with the tallest skyscraper in Tokyo, opened in 2007
- Nezu Museum , founded by the industrialist Nezu Kaiichirō , who built up an important collection of Chinese, Korean and Japanese art, including some national treasures.
- The Hatakayama Museum of Fine Arts , which houses the industrialist Issei Hatakayama's collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean exhibits related to the Japanese tea ceremony , including six national treasures .
- The Takahashi Korekiyo Memorial Park opened in 1941.

In his fifth term, the mayor of Minato is the former municipal official Masaaki Takei, who was last confirmed in office in June 2020 with the support of LDP , DVP , Kōmeitō and SDP and over 60% of the votes against four challengers. The 34-member district parliament was re-elected in the uniform regional elections in 2019 .
In the prefecture of Parliament Tokyo Minato is represented by two deputies; in the last election in 2017 , the Tomin-First candidate Nobuko Irie and LDP incumbent Kōichi Kanno shared the seats, with Irie (35,263 votes) receiving more than twice as many votes as Kanno (15,350). Another Tomin-backed candidate missed the second seat by almost 2,000 votes.
For the national House of Representatives, most of the district, along with Chiyoda and Shinjuku, make up the prestigious Tokyo 1 constituency , which Banri Kaieda ( KDP ) won in the 2017 election . A small part of Minato has belonged to constituency 2, which the LDP defended, since 2017.
