Akasaka ( Japanese 赤 坂 ; literally "red slope") is a district of the Japanese capital Tokyo . It is located in the inner-city area, which is dominated by office buildings and public facilities, to the southwest of the imperial residence and the Nagatacho government district . According to the census of 2005, the population was in the nine districts ( chome ) Akasakas 10,042, while the population of the day was 97,180.

Akasaka is located in the Minato district of the capital city of Tokyo . Its area of over 1.3 km² is bordered by Sotobori-dōri in the east and Aoyama-dōri in the north . To the north of it is Moto-Akasaka ("Old Akasaka") with the Akasaka-goyōchi, an imperial area with the residence of the Crown Prince, and the Geihinkan (also Akasaka Palace), the residence for state guests. Akasaka borders Aoyama to the west and Roppongi to the south and southeast .

From 1878 Akasaka was a separate district (- ku ) of the old Tokyo Prefecture and from 1889 the city of Tokyo . In 1947 he was united with Azabu and Shiba to form Minato District. Together with the districts of Moto-Akasaka and Aoyama, Akasaka forms an area with a joint branch office of the Minato District Administration ( 赤 坂 地区 総 合 支 所 , Akasaka-chiku sōgō-shisho ).

In the second phase of the Shōwa period after the Second World War , night clubs ("New Latin Quarter", "Copacabana", "Mikado") and bars settled in Akasaka-Mitsuke on the border with Nagatacho around the Hotel New Japan, which burned down in 1982 . Parts of Akasaka are still considered the stronghold of Sumiyoshi-kai ( 住 吉 会 ), the second largest yakuza group, which is also headquartered here. The rest of the district is predominantly dominated by corporate headquarters, hotels and public buildings. It is home to several embassies , including that of the United States, Tokyo Midtown , a high-rise complex on the site of the former Defense Agency , the Suntory Hall concert hall and the 18th-century Hikawa Shrine .

Several lines of the Tokyo subway run under the main streets at the borders of Akasaka , while the Chiyoda line runs through the district with a stop at Akasaka station. In the south, the inner ring ( shinkanjō-sen ) of the Shuto highways runs over the Roppongi-dōri . Akasaka's postal code is 107-0052.
