history
During the Edo period there were a total of 42 villages in what is now the Setagaya district. During the Meiji period , in 1871, the central and eastern parts were incorporated into Tokyo Prefecture , while the rest became part of Kanagawa Prefecture . Of this, further parts were incorporated into Tokyo Prefecture in 1893. When the city of Tokyo expanded in 1932, Setagaya was founded as a district and, after further amalgamations, took on its present dimensions in 1936.
After the dissolution of the city of Tokyo in 1943, Setagaya was founded on March 15, 1947 with the establishment of the 23 ("special -") districts in its current administrative structure.
politics
The former social democratic MP and nuclear opponent Nobuto Hosaka was elected mayor of Setagaya in the unified regional elections in April 2011 shortly after the Great East Japanese Earthquake . In the 2019 election , Hosaka was confirmed for a third term with around 61% of the vote against the LDP-supported former district parliamentary president Mihoko Mitsui (39%). The regular 50-member local parliament was also re-elected in the uniform regional elections.
The district forms an eight-mandate constituency for the prefecture parliament. In the last regular election in 2017 , the citizens of Setagaya elected three Liberal Democrats, two Tomin-First candidates and one member each from Kōmeitō, CPJ and Democratic Progressive Party to the parliament of Tokyo, no incumbent was voted out.
For elections to the lower house of the national parliament, Setagaya extends into constituencies of Tokyo 5 and 6 . After the 2017 general election, they will be represented by Liberal Democrat Kenji Wakamiya (41.1% of the vote in 2017) and Constitutional Democrat Takayuki Ochiai (40.8%) after the LDP won both constituencies in 2012 and 2014.
