Setagaya ( Japanese 世 田 谷 ) is a district of the Setagaya district (Setagaya-ku) of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . It is located in the eastern center of the district in southwest Tokyo . According to the 2010 census, it had 16,145 inhabitants in four numbered quarters (chōme) on an area of 0.77 km² . In Setagaya there are among other things the Setagaya campus of the private Tōkyō Iryō Hoken Daigaku and the Kokushikan University , the town hall of the Setagaya-ku and one of five regional branches (sōgō shisho) of the district administration. The Tōkyū Setagaya line tram runs through the district. The postal code of Setagaya is 154-0017.

In the Edo period there was a bailiwick of the Ii in Setagaya , whose main property was Hikone in the province of Ōmi , but from 1633 they had an exclave in the province of Musashi on the lower reaches of the Tama ( Setagaya-ryō , 世 田 谷 領 ), which of was administered here for a long time by the bailiffs from the Ōba ( 大 場 ) family . On the site of the 18th century residence of the bailiffs ( Setagaya daikan yashiki , 世 田 谷 代 官 屋 敷 ) in Setagaya 1-chōme, the district-run local history museum (Setagayaku-ritsu kyōdo shiryōkan) is located today . During the Meiji period, the area became part of Tokyo Prefecture in 1871. From 1889 the village community Setagaya (Setagaya-mura) existed in the district of Ebara , which in 1923 became a city (-machi) . In 1932, when it was incorporated into the city of Tokyo, it became part of the new Setagaya district. The Setagaya district received its current boundaries and the current division into four chôme in 1966.
