geography

history
The area of today's Higashimurayama has been inhabited since the Japanese Paleolithic and numerous remains from the Jomon , Yayoi and Kofun periods have been found. The Battle of Kumegawa took place there during the Kamakura period.
After the Meiji Restoration, the area that had previously mainly belonged to the crown domain of the Shogun ( bakuryō ) came to the prefectures of Nirayama , Shinagawa and from 1872 to Kanagawa ; a small part - the village of Onta - still belonged to Saitama until 1880 . In 1878, when the ancient counties were reactivated and reorganized as a subdivision of the prefectures, Tama County was divided, the present-day area of Higashi-Murayama became part of North Tama County . With the introduction of the affected Prussia, today's community forms in 1889 was established in the district of North-Tama Kanagawa from the pre-modern villages Noguchi ( 野口 ) Megurita ( 廻田 ), Onta ( 大岱 ) Kumegawa ( 久米川 ) and Minami Akitsu ( 南秋津 ) the village of Higashimurayama ( Higashimurayama mura , "East Murayama Village"; see also Musashi-Murayama for the history of the name Murayama for the region). On April 1, 1893, the city, like the entire Tama area, was transferred from Kanagawa Prefecture to Tokyo Prefecture. In 1942 Higashimurayama became a town ( -machi ) , on April 1, 1964 a town (-shi) .
