Location Chūōs in Tokyo Prefecture | ||
Chūō ( Japanese 中央 区 , - ku , "central district" / "district center") is one of the 23 districts in the east of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo and is located in the eastern center of Tokyo , the capital of Japan . The district is one of the main business centers of Tokyo , along with Shinjuku district in the west of the city. Chūō was created on March 15, 1947 from the merger of the old city districts Nihombashi and Kyōbashi . The famous Ginza boulevard and the Tsukiji fish market are located in the district . 166,536 inhabitants live in Chūō, and the district counts over 650,000 commuters and visitors every day.
geography
Chūō is located in the east of Tokyo Prefecture. The district stretches from the Yamanote Line and Tokyo Station in the west to the right bank of the Sumida . In the northeast it extends to the Kanda , in the south to the Bay of Tokyo. Much of the area of Chūō has been created over the centuries by reclamation in the bay, most recently the entire area of Tsukishima .
Chūō got its name ("center") from the fact that it was in the middle of the old city districts of the former city of Tokyo , which are now 23 districts. The surrounding districts are Kōtō , Sumida , Taitō , Chiyoda and Minato .
