Ichikawa ( Japanese 市 川 市 , -shi , dt. Market on the river ) is a city on the eastern edge of Tokyo in the prefecture of Chiba on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

geography

Ichikawa has an area of ​​56.39 km², an east-west extension of 8.2 km and a north-south extension of 13.33 km. The Edo River forms the border to Edogawa , Tokyo , to the west of Ichikawa .

history

The city emerged on November 3, 1934 from the merger of the communities Ichikawa ( 市 川 町 , -machi ), Yawata ( 八 幡 町 , -machi ) and Nakayama ( 中山 町 , -machi ), as well as the village of Kokubun ( 国 分 村 , -mura ) in Higashikatsushika County . In November 1949 the village Ōgashiwa ( 大 柏村 , -mura ), in March 1955 the community Gyōtoku ( 行 徳 町 , -machi ) and in October the community Minamigyōtoku ( 南 行 徳 町 , -machi ) - all in the mentioned district - were incorporated. The provincial capital of the historic Shimousa Province was in today's Kōnodai district . Ruins of Kokubun-ji have been found near the Kōnodai train station .

Culture

  • The Japanese painter Higashiyama Kaii is an honorary citizen of Ichikawa. Some of his works are on display in the Kaii Higashiyama Memorial Hall .
  • The Chinese writer and politician Guo Moruo lived in Ichikawa from 1927 to 1937 with his second wife, the Japanese nurse Sato Tomiko. His house is now a museum.
  • The lacquer artist Saji Tadashi (1914–1999) is an honorary citizen of the city.

  • The metal and textile industries, among others, are economically significant.
  • On March 9, 1948, Tojuro Iijima founded the Yamazaki Baking (Japanese: Yamazaki Seipan-sho ), a bakery for western bread. Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd. (Japanese Yamazaki Seipan Kabushiki Gaisha ). The company headquarters have since been relocated to Chiyoda , Tokyo. The subsidiary Daily Yamazaki, an operator of franchise convenience stores, is based in Ichikawa.

Attractions

  • The more than 700 year old Hokekyō-ji is one of the most important temples of the Nichiren-shū . Among other things, the area houses a five-story pagoda (Gojyunoto), with a large Buddha statue made in 1719 (see Daibutsu ), the largest bronze statue in Chiba Prefecture, and a statue of the founder of the Nichiren sect . The road that leads from Nakayama Station to the temple complex is famous for its historic buildings.
  • On the site of the Katsushika-Hachimangu Shrine, which was founded around 890, are the '1000 Ginko Trees' classified as a 'National Nature Monument'.
  • If one follows the Daimon Dori, one arrives at the Guho-ji, built in 737, on a hill.
