Gardena is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 58,829 inhabitants (as of 2010). Gardena was originally part of Rancho San Pedro , the fief that Juan José Dominguez owned in 1784 from King Charles III. received.
The city's nickname The City of Opportunity was adopted in 2006. The former motto The Freeway City referred to the proximity of Gardena to the intersection of Freeways 405 , 110 , and 91 , but none of which runs through the city area.

Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000 Gardena 57,746 people inhabited the city. The population density was 3830.9 people per km ². There were 21,041 housing units at an average of 1395.9 per km ². The Gardena population was 23.82% White , 25.99% Black or African American , 0.64% Native American , 26.82% Asian , 0.73% Pacific Islander , 16.94% said other races belong to and 5.05% named two or more races. 31.82% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Gardena distributed to 20,324 households out of which 33.5% were living in children under the age of 18. 44.5% of households were married, 18.1% had a female head of household without a husband, and 31.0% were not families. 25.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.2% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.38 people.
The urban population was divided into 25.8% minors, 8.7% 18–24 year olds, 32.3% 25–44 year olds, 20.9% 45–64 year olds and 12.4% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 95.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 91.4 men.
