Maxine Waters (born August 15, 1938 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since 1991 she has represented parts of Los Angeles for the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Maxine Moore Carr, her maiden name, attended Vashon High School in St. Louis. In 1961 she moved to California. There she worked in a clothing factory and as a telephone operator. From 1966 she worked in Watts for the local project Head Start Program . She also studied at California State University in Los Angeles until 1970 .

Maxine Waters is married for the second time and lives in Los Angeles.

Political career

During her studies, Waters began a political career. Between 1972 and 1988 she was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions ; from 1977 to 1991 she was a member of the California State Assembly .

In the 1990 election , Waters was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th Congressional District of California , where she succeeded Augustus F. Hawkins on January 3, 1991 . After redesigning the constituencies, she represented from 1993 the 35th and from 2013 the 43rd congressional electoral district of her state, which, despite the different names, always comprised similar areas with parts of the city of Los Angeles.

Waters is a member of the Finance Committee . Before that, she was also a member of the Judiciary Committee .

Positions and controversies

In 1997 and 1998 she headed the Congressional Black Caucus ; she is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus . She fights against racial discrimination and supported an application for compensation for the descendants of the former slaves . Waters was also a staunch opponent of the Iraq war . Since 2004 she has been repeatedly confronted with allegations of bribery; however, despite some investigations, no charges were brought.

Waters came under more media focus during Donald Trump's presidency because of her frequent criticism of the president. After promoting an impeachment trial against Donald Trump , Trump turned against Waters on Twitter , describing her as a "very low IQ" person. In contrast, Republican Congressmen have emphasized their ability and willingness to work together in a non-partisan way. Thus, the raised from Oklahoma native MPs Frank Lucas shows that Waters detected a matter completely and keep their word. Waters was a ranking member of the Finance Committee until 2019 and chairman of the committee since the Democrats' victory in the 2018 election .
