Charles Clayton
Charles Clayton (born October 5, 1825 in Derbyshire , England , † October 4, 1885 in Oakland , California ) was an English- American politician of British origin. Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Charles Clayton attended public schools in his English homeland. In 1842 he came to the United States. A few years later he moved to California. Between 1849 and 1850 he was mayor ( Alcalde ) of Santa Clara . In this city he also founded some flour mills and worked as a miller for some time. He later settled in San Francisco . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1863 and 1866 he was a member of the California State Assembly . Between 1864 and 1869 he was a member of the San Francisco City Council ( Board of Supervisors ). In 1870 he was in charge of customs in the greater San Francisco area, including the port.
In the congressional election of 1872 , Clayton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of California , where he succeeded Sherman Otis Houghton , who moved to the fourth district, on March 4, 1873 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1874, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1881 and 1882, Charles Clayton ran the California State Prison. He died in Oakland on October 4, 1885, the day before his 60th birthday.
