Delwin Morgan "Del" Clawson (born January 11, 1914 in Thatcher , Arizona , †  May 5, 1992 in Downey , California ) was an American politician . Between 1963 and 1978 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Del Clawson attended public schools in Arizona. In 1934 he graduated from Gila College in his native Thatcher. Between 1934 and 1940 he worked in various professions in his home country. In 1941 he worked for the United States Employment Service ; between 1942 and 1947 he served with the Federal Public Housing Authority in Arizona and California. He then served as manager of the Mutual Housing Association in Compton, California , between 1947 and 1963 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1953 and 1957 he was a member of the Compton parish council, after which he was mayor of that city from 1957 to 1961.

After the death of MP Clyde Doyle , Clawson was elected in the by-election for the 23rd seat of California as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on June 11, 1963. After seven re-elections, he was able to complete almost eight legislative terms in Congress until his resignation on December 31, 1978 . Since 1975 he has represented the 33rd  constituency of his state in Congress. During his time as a congressman, the Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair fell, among other things, as well as the final phase of the civil rights movement in domestic politics .

In 1978, Del Clawson declined to run again. He resigned from his mandate on December 31, 1978, four days before the official end of the legislature. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died in Downey on May 5, 1992.
