Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American politician . She represented the US state of California in the US Senate from 1993 to 2017 . On January 3, 2017, she resigned from this body after she had not stood for re-election in 2016.

Born Barbara Levy, she was a stock market trader in her younger years, then a journalist and co-editor of Pacific Sun. Eventually she moved to California, where she was involved with the Democrats , in January 1983 she was elected as a congressman to the House of Representatives.

From 1993, Barbara Boxer was a senator for the West Coast state of California in the US Senate, most recently representing one of the three states with two female senators (together with Dianne Feinstein , alongside Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire and Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell in Washington ). She was seen as an important representative of the left-wing liberal wing of the Democrats in the Senate and campaigned for the environment, women's, children's and civil rights (including homosexuals) as well as for work and the economy. In the Senate, she chaired the Committee on Environment and Public Works and the Ethics Committee from 2007 to 2015 .

In 2002/2003 she voted as one of the few senators against the Iraq war . In 2005, she stood as the only female Senator on the side of Congressman Stephanie Tubbs Jones to appeal against the election results in Ohio . She was also the only senator who harshly criticized the Foreign Minister-designate Condoleezza Rice in her hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the 2010 election, she won against Carly Fiorina , former CEO of Hewlett-Packard , with 51.2%.

In January 2015, Boxer announced that he no longer wanted to run in the 2016 Senate elections. She was succeeded by Kamala Harris , who was favored by Boxer in the election campaign .

Senator Boxer is married and has two grown children.
