Matthew Gilbert Martínez (born February 14, 1929 in Walsenburg , Huerfano County , Colorado , †  October 15, 2011 in Fredericksburg , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1982 and 2001 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Matthew Martínez attended Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles . Between 1947 and 1950 he served in the Marine Corps . In 1956 he graduated from the Los Angeles Trade Technical School . In the following years he worked in the construction industry. Between 1971 and 1974 he was a member of the Monterey Park City Planning Commission . From 1974 to 1980 he sat there on the local council; in 1974 and 1980 he was also mayor there. Politically, Martínez was initially a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1980 and 1982 he was a member of the California State Assembly .

After the resignation of Congressman George E. Danielson , Martínez was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the 30th seat of California , where he took up his new mandate on July 13, 1982. After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2001 . He was part of the Education and Labor Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee, and was also a member and chairman of several sub-committees.

In 2000, Martínez was no longer nominated for re-election by the Democrats. He then switched to the Republican Party . However, after 2001 he did not hold any higher political office. Matthew Martínez was married and had five children. He died of heart failure on October 15, 2011 in Fredericksburg.
