Antonio "Tony" Cardenas (born March 31, 1963 in San Fernando , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since 2013 he has represented the 29th Congressional constituency of the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tony Cardenas studied electrical engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara until 1986 . He then worked as a real estate agent and insurance agent.

Between 1996 and 2002 Cardenas was a member of the California State Assembly . There he temporarily headed the budget committee. From 2003, he sat in the City Council of Los Angeles .

In the 2012 election , Cardenas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  Congressional electoral district of California , where he succeeded Adam Schiff , who moved to the 28th district, on January 3, 2013 . The district covers part of the San Fernando Valley . In the election he prevailed with 74 to 26 percent of the vote against the non-party candidate David R. Hernandez. After three re-elections in 2014 , 2016 and 2018 , his mandate runs until January 3, 2021.

At the beginning of May 2018 it became known that Cardenas was being prosecuted for alleged sexual assault against a minor. He is said to have touched a 16-year-old on her genitals during an emergency doctor ride in 2007. Cardenas denies these allegations. In July 2019, the lawsuit was dismissed.

Cardenas is married and has four children. Privately, he lives in Los Angeles.
