General
The 435 electoral districts are based on the last census in 2010 so that there are roughly the same number of citizens in each district. In each constituency, a member of parliament was directly elected for two years. The number of MPs (called in English Congressmen or Representatives ) that a state sends to the House of Representatives depends, unlike in the US Senate, on its population. The House of Representatives elected in 2016 was constituted on January 3, 2017.
Paul Ryan , Speaker of the House since October 29, 2015 , was confirmed in office at the beginning of the legislature; he is expected to hold it until the end of the legislative period on January 3, 2019. Nancy Pelosi (Democrats) has been the leader of the Democratic group in the US House of Representatives ('minority leader') since January 2011.
