The elections for the United States House of Representatives in 2002 took place on November 5 of this year, midway through President George W. Bush's term in office ; So it was a matter of the so-called midterm elections . As a result, the Republican Party gained eight seats compared to the previous election and was thus able to increase its majority in the House of Representatives a little. The Republicans also won the Senate elections , which were held in parallel . Cause of the profits was mainly the tense atmosphere because of the proclaimed war on terrorism ( war on terror ) after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 . In part, the new constituency delimitation ( redistricting ) in republican-dominated states was blamed for this.

Republican Dennis Hastert of Illinois was Speaker of the House. The representatives James H. Maloney ( Connecticut / D), Karen Thurman ( Florida / D), Connie Morella ( Maryland / R), Bill Luther ( Minnesota / D) and Felix Grucci ( New York / R) were voted out .
