Constance Albanese "Connie" Morella (born February 12, 1931 in Somerville , Massachusetts ) is a former American politician . Between 1987 and 2003 she represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Connie Albanese attended Somerville High School until 1948 and then studied at Boston University until 1954 . This was followed by further studies at the American University in Washington, DC , which she completed in 1967. Between 1970 and 1987 she worked as a teacher at Montgomery College in Maryland. At the same time, she embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1971 to 1975 she was a member of the Commission for Women in Montgomery County ; from 1979 to 1986 she sat in the Maryland House of Representatives . In 1980 she unsuccessfully sought her party's nomination for the congressional elections.

In the 1986 congressional elections , Morella was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Maryland, where she succeeded Michael D. Barnes on January 3, 1987 . After seven re-elections, she was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . During this time, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the beginning of the Iraq war took place . In 2002 she was not re-elected.

After her tenure in the US House of Representatives, Connie Morella served as US Ambassador to the OECD between 2003 and 2007 . She is now a faculty member at American University in Washington.
