Franz Nikolasch

Franz Nikolasch (born April 3, 1933 in Millstatt am See ) is an Austrian theologian and emeritus university professor .

Life

Franz Nikolasch attended grammar school in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and then went to Rome to study theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University , which he completed in 1961 with a doctorate. He was ordained a priest in 1958 .

After completing his studies , he returned to Villach as a religion teacher and also worked as a deputy priest at the Villach parish church. Nikolasch later taught at the philosophical and theological college in Klagenfurt and became rector of the St. Georgen am Längsee educational center .

In 1967 Nikolasch completed his habilitation at the University of Salzburg in liturgy and Christian archeology and was appointed university professor in 1969 . In this function he played a key role in setting up the newly created Institute for Liturgical Science and Sacraments Theology. Moved to Salzburg, he also worked there as a pastor for the Church of St. Leonhard in Grödig .

Nikolasch subsequently took over university management functions such as dean of the theological faculty in 1971 and rector of the university in 1973. He later became a member of the Senate. He retired in 2011.

The liturgy specialist Nikolasch was consultor of the consilium for the implementation of the liturgy constitution and a member of the 'Liturgical Commission for Austria'. He was also involved in the creation of new liturgical books by the Second Vatican Council. Further fields of research are liturgical law, the sacrament of reconciliation and communion ecclesiology .

In addition to his academic achievements, Nikolasch also deals with cultural affairs and endeavors to establish a dialogue between art and the church, including as chairman of the Salzburg regional cultural advisory board or as chairman of the Millstatt Music Weeks .

After his retirement, Nikolasch was involved in many private and public bodies to promote the renewal of the church from inside and outside.
