Wolfgang Waldstein

Wolfgang Waldstein (born August 27, 1928 in Hangö , Finland ) is an Austrian legal historian .

Life

After the outbreak of the Soviet-Finnish winter war in 1939, Wolfgang Waldstein's family came to Salzburg in 1940 . After graduating from high school , he studied law and obtained a doctorate . In 1963 he was at the University of Innsbruck habilitation .

In 1964 he became an associate professor for Roman law at the University of Innsbruck. From 1965 until his retirement in 1992 he taught Roman law and legal philosophy as a full professor at the University of Salzburg , where he was rector from 1968 to 1969. From 1996 to 1998 he was a full professor at the Civil Law Faculty of the Pontifical Lateran University . He also taught canon law at the Gustav Siewerth Academy .

He is known among legal historians and students as the long-time editor and editor of “ Dulckeit / Schwarz / Waldstein”, a standard work on Roman legal history. Waldstein is very keen to revive natural law and published some writings on the right to life . His book Into the Heart was written by the then Pope Benedict XVI. Quoted several times in his Bundestag speech in 2011 .

In 1976 he was significantly involved in the “Campaign for the Preservation of the Tridentine Mass” and also published the entire process of the submission to the Austrian Bishops' Conference in the documentation “Pastoral care and liturgical reform ”. Since 2007 he has been honorary chairman of the lay association Pro Missa Tridentina . As a supporter of the right to life movement , he is involved in several associations against abortion and belongs, among others, to the Juristenvereinigung Lebensrecht eV V. , who advocated the prosecution of abortion .

Since May 31, 1994 Waldstein was a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life and since 1999 a member of the executive council of this academy. With the rejuvenation and reorganization of the academy as part of the 2016 curia reform, which ended the dominance of Opus Dei in the institution, he left the academy without being able to retain the honorary membership that was automatically awarded at the age of 80 according to the original statutes. Waldstein has been mentioned as a well-known Austrian Opus Dei member since the 1980s . In his memoirs he only mentions one daughter who is a full member of this organization.

Wolfgang Waldstein is Catholic , widowed and the father of several children. As a hobby he works as a freelance wood sculptor. He is the father of the theologian Michael Waldstein .
