The Péter Pázmány Catholic University ( Hungarian : Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem , PPKE ) is a Catholic university in Budapest , Esztergom and Piliscsaba ( Hungary ) with around 8,000 students. The headquarters and rectorate of the university are located at the location of the Catholic Faculty in the 8th Józsefváros district of Budapest .
history
The university goes back to the historical University of Tyrnau , founded in 1635 by Cardinal Péter Pázmány in Tyrnau (Hungarian Nagyszombat , today Trnava in Slovakia) . In 1949 the Theological Faculty of the University of Budapest was converted into a Catholic Theological Academy, which has been operating as the Péter Pázmány Catholic University since 1992. It has been a state-recognized university since 1993 with five faculties and two independent institutes. In 1999 the university was recognized by the Holy See . (see Ex Corde Ecclesiae ).
