List of universities in Budapest
The list of universities in Budapest includes all colleges , universities , conservatories and academies that are based in the Hungarian capital Budapest or have educational institutions there.
The first university in what is now Budapest was created by the decree of Queen Maria Theresa on February 1, 1777 to relocate the Hungarian University of Tyrnau to Buda . In 1784 the University of Buda moved to Pest and was henceforth called the Royal Hungarian University .
By 1990, numerous changes were made through the establishment of new faculties and spin-offs from faculties to colleges and universities, as well as repeated name changes. The most recent change for Hungarian education brought about the law passed by the Hungarian Parliament in 1999 on the reorganization of higher education and its institutions.
