Private universities

Since 1999, 46 private universities have been established in the Czech Republic. In 2008, 50,659 students were studying at private universities, which was 13.5% of the total. Economically oriented courses predominate in the range of courses (2008: 48.53%). In 2008, no courses in the natural sciences, agriculture, forestry or veterinary fields were offered. The range of courses and the number of students are, with a few exceptions, significantly smaller than at public universities. The private higher education system in the Czech Republic is generally not yet consolidated. There are also significant differences in the quality of education among private universities.

Education

The academic year lasts from September 1 to August 31 and is divided into winter and summer semesters . The semesters are divided into lecture time (approx. 13 weeks), examination time (approx. 6 weeks) and vacation. Each university decides on its own examination and lecture times in coordination with the respective faculty. The three-level system according to the Bologna classification applies nationwide : Bachelor's degree (3 - 4 years), Master's degree (usually 2 years further; in a few fields of study also as an undergraduate degree 5 - 6 years) and doctoral degree (min. 3 years). The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has now been introduced at most universities .
