The Jan Evangelista Purkyně University Ústí nad Labem , in Czech Univerzita Jana Evangelisty Purkyně v Ústí nad Labem , or UJEP for short , is a university in Ústí nad Labem (German Aussig ), which was founded in 1991. The name of the university is due to the physiologist and scholar Jan Evangelista Purkyně (1787–1869).
history
In 1954 a higher pedagogical school was established in Ústí nad Labem. This was converted into a pedagogical institute in 1959 and a pedagogical faculty in 1964. In 1991 the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University was founded. At that time the university consisted of three faculties, the Pedagogical Faculty, the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, and the Institute for Slavic-Germanic Research. In 1993 the institute for creative culture was founded, which was transformed into the faculty for applied arts and design in 2000. In 1998 the Institute for Technology and Production Control was founded, from which the Faculty for Production Technology and Management emerged in 2006. In 2003 the Institute for Health Sciences was established. In 2005, the Faculty of Education was divided into a number of scientific and humanities areas. From these, the Faculty of Natural Sciences emerged in 2005 and the Faculty of Philosophy in 2006. The Institute for Slavic-Germanic Research was affiliated to the Philosophical Faculty in 2008. At the same time, the Faculty of Applied Arts and Design was renamed the Faculty of Art and Design.
The university building, in which the Philosophical and Pedagogical Faculties are based today (see photo), was the seat of the administration of the Aussig administrative district before 1945 under the National Socialist District President Hans Krebs . A mural on the ground floor of the building still reminds of this today.
In 2003 the project “Campus University JE Purkyně” was launched. Until the planned completion in 2013, all faculties are to be housed close to the center on a campus. The project is financed by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and by the EU's education fund. According to the current state of planning, the investment volume is CZK 2.9 billion. The Pavilion D building, which houses the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences and the library of the Pedagogical Faculty, has already been completed. In March 2008 the 250 million CZK renovation of Pavilion D will be completed (Faculty of Art and Design).
