The Masaryk University ( Masarykova univerzita , MUNI) in Brno is the second largest university in the Czech Republic . The university, founded in 1919, today consists of nine faculties with around 30,000 students. The university is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia .
From 1960 to 1990 it was called Jan Evangelista Purkyně University ( Univerzita Jana Evangelisty Purkyně , UJEP).
History of origin
Masaryk University was founded in 1919 with four faculties (Law, Medicine, Science and Philosophy).
In 1939 the university was closed by the German occupying forces ( special action in Prague ). Some professors and students from the university joined the resistance, including Vojtěch Rosický , Jan Jebavý , Jan Uher and Josef Tvrdý . Today stumbling stones or memorial stones in Brno remind of these resistance fighters. After the World War , the restoration of the Faculty of Law was slowed down by the Communist coup in 1948 and ended with its abolition in 1950. In 1953, the Faculty of Education (founded in 1946) was spun off, leaving the university with only three faculties. In 1960 the Faculty of Pharmacy was closed by a state decision, and the university was renamed after the Czech biologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně , as Masaryk, the founder of the western-oriented Czechoslovak Republic, was a persona non grata for the communist regime . In 1964 the pedagogical faculty was reintegrated and in 1969 the law faculty was reopened.
Since 1990 the university has had its original name again. In the same year the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences was founded, in 1994 the Faculty of Computer Science, in 1998 the Faculty of Social Sciences and 2001 the Faculty of Sport Sciences. In 2007 the Mendel polar station was set up in Antarctica.

A trauma clinic was established in 2002 at the Accident Hospital in Brno ( Úrazová nemocnice v Brně ). Two other clinics are located at the Masaryk Oncological Institute ( Masarykův onkologický ústav ).
The Erlabrunn clinics in Saxony act as a training hospital for the medical faculty.
