Milena Bartlová (born January 19, 1958 in Prague ) is a Czech art historian with a focus on art and culture of the Middle Ages . In her research publications she also deals with the methodology of art history and has taken on some teaching assignments in this area. She is also involved in various queer and gender activities and is interested in questions of national identity .

Life and professional career

Milena Bartlová, in some rare cases also called Milena Štefanová-Bartlová or Milena Štefanová, is the daughter of the economist and diplomat Rita Klímová and the former Communist Party functionary and reform communist Zdeněk Mlynář .

After attending grammar school from 1973 to 1977 (with high school diploma), Bartlová studied theory and history of fine arts at the philosophical faculty of Charles University in Prague , where she received the title PhDr. obtained his Ph.D. in 1995. at the Institute for History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . From 1978 to 1990 Bartlová worked in the National Gallery in Prague , from 1983 as curator of the collection of ancient art. From 1991 to 1992 she was employed at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, from 1996 to 1997 she was again a curator in the collection of ancient art there. In 2001 she completed her habilitation and got the position as a lecturer at the art faculty of Masaryk University in Brno, in 2005 she became a professor there. From 2010 to 2012 Bartlová did research at the Collegium Europaeum . From 2010 to 2011 she taught as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , was a professor at the Art Academy in Prague in 2011 and from 2013 to 2015 at the Charles University in Prague. Bartlová made two stays abroad: 2008 at the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin, 2009/2010 as visiting professor at the Institute for Image and Art History at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Milena Bartlová performs advisory work on numerous commissions and is or was a member of scientific advisory boards, including:

  • Scientific advisory board of the magazines Castrum Pragense , Bulletin Moravské galerie , Opuscula Historiae Artium , Colloquia Medievalia Pragensia , Studia Medievalia Bohemica , Quart and others
  • Scientific advisory board of the Charles University in Prague, the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes , the National Gallery in Prague, Commission of the National Exhibition 600 Years Council of Constance 1414–1418 (Karlsruhe, Konstanz 2012–2014) and others

In addition to her wide-ranging activity in the field of art history, Bartlová is also interested in other questions:

  • In the area of ​​national identity, Bartlová criticizes the relationship between the Czechs and the Slovaks and speaks in this context of "colonialist basic features" - whereby she does not only mean the past when both nations lived in one state, but also the relationship to the Slovak minority in the present-day Czech Republic.
  • Another topic for Bartlová is the maintenance of the cultural legacy of the German-speaking population in Bohemia, which was expelled after 1945. As a member of the scientific advisory board of the Collegium Bohemicum in Ústí nad Labem , she took part in the development of the concept for a museum there on the history and culture of the German-speaking inhabitants of the Bohemian countries, which is one of the most expensive museum projects in Bohemia and the cultural heritage of the German minority presented to a wide audience.
  • Bartlová is also active in the field of gender studies, not only as a journalist, but also actively through her membership in the scientific advisory board of the Společnost pro queer paměť (Society for Queer Memory) and its center queer paměti in Prague, which is an archive of LGBT and queer communities in the Czech Republic are being built up and made accessible in its own museum and library.
