Společnost pro queer paměť , abbreviated to SPQP , German Society for Queer Memory , is a Czech organization in the field of LGBT ( L esbian, G ay, B isexual and T ransgender) and Queer . It was founded in 2013 and has been running the Centrum queer paměti (Center for Queer Memory) project, an archive of memories , since 2015 .

History and activity

In 2013, the historian Jan Seidl and a few friends founded the company SPQP to create an LGBT and queer platform for intergenerational dialogues in Prague and the Czech Republic; a museum and archive of the community should also be established. The activist and board member of the Milena Bartlová project described one of the reasons : "Until then, there were only police and psychiatric archives on homosexuals in the Czech Republic, which stigmatized this group".

An archive was finally created on June 1, 2015 as part of the Centrum queer paměti project in Prague. It is an alternative archive on this subject, which makes particular use of the oral history method and reproduces the voices of those affected. It is seen as an important instrument with which a breakthrough out of forced oblivion can succeed - and that, according to Bártlová, is “a prerequisite for the excluded to be able to return to their kinship generations and family ties”.

The founding date was chosen carefully by the SPQP: it was the 147th anniversary of the first publicly known campaign by homosexuals in Bohemia. At that time, at the end of the 1860s, an unknown author had written to the well-known physiologist and politician Jan Evangelista Purkyně , in which he asked him to investigate the causes of homosexuality and to stand up for impunity (which was then only half-heartedly) .

As a model for the center served u. a. such institutions as SchwuZ in Berlin or QWien in Vienna. One of the main focuses of the centre's activities are non-heterosexual seniors.

In the Centrum queer paměti the SPQP runs a number of other campaigns. This includes exhibitions, a library with fiction and specialist literature on the subject is available, there is a digital library, a museum, visits by school classes are organized; the SPQP also takes part in the annual Prague Pride parades .

On May 17, 2016, the company accepted the bePROUD award 2015 for the opening of the center. At the event, attended by personalities from abroad, the award was presented by V. M. Hoeks, Ambassador of the Netherlands, in his Prague residence.
