The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Czech Academy věd České republiky , abbreviated AV ČR ) and the Czech Academy of Sciences (English Czech Academy of Sciences , abbreviated as CAS ) is the leading non-university research institution in the Czech Republic . The academy deals with basic research and applied research. The academy's central administration and forty research institutes are based in Prague , the other institutes in other cities in the country.
The Academy awards several awards, including the Heyrovský Medal .
history
The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was founded in 1992 as the successor to the Czech part of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences , which in turn was created in 1952 through the merger of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences .
The academy employs around 6,400 people and is chaired by Eva Zažímalová.
organization
The main task of the academy is basic research . The academy advises the state in the fields of research and development, operates national and international research programs and coordinates the cooperation between applied research and industry . The institutes also participate in education with doctoral programs.
The highest self-governing body of the AV ČR is the Academic Parliament, two-thirds of which are academics from the individual institutions, as well as representatives from universities, the state administration, representatives from industry and other public figures. The executive body is the Academic Council, represented by the chairman of the Science Academy. The Scientific Council deals primarily with political and scientific questions of the academy. All bodies are elected for a period of four years. An independent supervisory commission monitors and evaluates the results and projects of the academy.
The academy is financed from the state budget. The financing of the scientific work corresponds to the international standard. In addition to the purely general financing, special project financing is also implemented.
