Rudolf Zahradník (born October 20, 1928 in Bratislava ; † October 31, 2020 ) was a Czech physical chemist and President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic .

Life

Rudolf Zahradník studied at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague . From 1961 he worked at what was then the Jaroslav Heyrovský Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague . His main area of ​​work was theoretical chemistry and especially quantum chemistrywhere he worked on a variety of scientific topics. Zahradník published more than 350 articles in scientific journals as well as several textbooks and monographs. From 1990 to 1993 he was Director of the Jaroslav Heyrovský Institute for Physical Chemistry and then from 1993 to 2001 President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Zahradník received numerous awards at home and abroad and was an honorary doctor of several universities as well as a foreign member of various academies:

Chancellor Angela Merkel called Rudolf Zahradník on April 3, 2012 in a speech at the law faculty of Charles University as her teacher.
