Archaeological Institute Prague

The Archaeological Institute Prague ( Czech : Archeologický ústav Akademie věd České republiky, Praha, vvi , short ARÚ ; German : Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague) is a public research institution in the Czech Republic . It is based in Prague . The institute's activities focus on archeology . It is also the most important professional authority in the field of archaeological monument preservation in the Czech Republic. Since 1992 the institute has been operating within the framework of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (AV ČR) and, together with the Archaeological Institute Brno (ARÚB), is part of the Academy's Human and Social Sciences section.

The institute was founded in 1919 as the State Archaeological Institute ( Státní archeologický ústav ) and was then under the Ministry of National Education and Training. In 1953 the institute became part of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (ČSAV) and in 1992 it became part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The Vltava flood of 2002 destroyed most of the library. An estimated 70,000 books and archive material were lost. Today around 100 scientists, including 50 archaeologists, work in the five scientific departments of the institute under the direction of the director Luboš Jiráň.
