The colonial settlement , also called Africa settlement , is a settlement in the Zamdorf district of Munich .

location

The colonial settlement is north of Eggenfelder Straße between the Steinhausen settlement and the Zamilapark . It has an extension of about 650 m in the east-west direction, in the north-south direction of about 300–400 m and an area of about 23 hectares. In the southeast of the settlement there is an allotment garden with an area of about 3 hectares.

Surname

The settlement was built from 1934 under the name "Zamdorf unemployed settlement". Their streets were named after colonial pioneers and Africa explorers, e.g. B. Rohlfsstraße after Gerhard Rohlfs , who was the first to cross the Sahara from north to south, and Emin-Pascha-Platz after Eduard Schnitzer , who was governor of the Sudanese province of Equatoria under the name Emin Pascha. Therefore, the settlement was named Kolonialsiedlung or Afrikasiedlung in 1935.

Some of these street names are now controversial, as the historical achievements of their namesake seem doubtful today. In 2000, Karl-Peters -Strasse, named after the German colonialist, was renamed Ida-Pfeiffer-Strasse after the travel writer Ida Pfeiffer .

history

The first houses in the settlement were built in autumn 1934. In the following years the settlement grew to 140 small-scale homes, 61 of which were semi-detached houses. Each unit had a living space of around 53 m² and a garden of around 200 m², which was used for growing vegetables and keeping small animals.

The houses were rented to needy families. 1962 began to sell the houses to their residents.
