Jiří Drahoš (born February 20, 1949 in Český Těšín , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech politician and physical chemist. Drahoš was chairman of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and ran in the 2018 presidential election , in which he lost 48.6% of the vote in the run-off against incumbent Miloš Zeman .

Life

Academic career

Drahoš spent his childhood in Jablunkov in Moravian Silesia, where he graduated from university in 1967.

From 1967 to 1972 he studied physical chemistry at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague . In 1972/73 Drahoš completed his military service and from September 1973 continued his studies at the Institute for Theoretical Basics of Process Engineering ( Ústav teoretických základů chemické techniky ) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . He received his doctorate there in 1976 on the subject of a “Generalized calculation method for the liquid / vapor balance at high pressures”.

From 1977 he worked at the Institute for Chemical Processes ( Ústav chemických procesů ) of the Academy of Sciences. In 1985/86 he was a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Hanover and in 1989 he was a guest lecturer at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) for one semester . After completing his habilitation in 1994 , Drahoš was head of the Institute for Chemical Processes at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic from 1996 to 2003. Drahoš has been a university professor since 2003.

From March 2009 to March 2017 Drahoš was President of the Academy of Sciences. He is co-author of numerous scientific publications and patents.

Drahoš was awarded the Czech Republic Medal of Merit in 2012 and received honorary doctorates from the TU Bratislava and the University of Kobe (Japan).

Political commitment

Drahoš is considered a determined Atlanticist and supports the western ties of the Czech Republic. He advocates the admission of war refugees to the Czech Republic and signed an appeal to the public by Czech academics in August 2015.

On March 28, 2017, after considering this at the end of 2016, Drahoš publicly confirmed his candidacy for the office of President of the Czech Republic in Jablunkov . On November 3, he submitted 141,234 signatures from Czech citizens, after which he was accepted for the election.

While he qualified for the runoff election on January 26th and 27th in the first round on January 13, 2018 with 1,369,601 (26.6%) of the votes cast, he was defeated by incumbent Miloš Zeman with 2,701,206 (48th , 6%) to 2,853,390 (51.4%) votes with a turnout of 66.6%.

After the narrow defeat, Drahoš promised to remain active in politics. He ran for the constituency of Prague 4 in the Senate election in October 2018 and won a seat in the first ballot. Drahoš joined the Starostové a nezávislí faction as a senator .
