Senate election in the Czech Republic 2018

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2018 Senate election in the Czech Republic took place on October 5 and 6, the runoff election on October 12 and 13. In Senate elections, a third of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic is re-elected, i.e. 27 of the 81 seats are newly awarded.

The traditionally low turnout in elections to the Czech upper house was 42.26% in the first ballot and 16.49% in the second. The governing parties ANO and ČSSD were only able to win one mandate each, the latter losing 12 seats in the Senate. The right-wing liberal ODS recorded the biggest gains, gaining 5 seats. In addition, the mayor's party STAN and independent candidates were able to prevail. The communist KSČM lost its last seat in the Senate and is no longer represented in the second chamber of parliament for the first time.

Only six out of 27 senators were re-elected. A special feature of the election was that three non-party candidates from the 2018 presidential election entered the Senate: Jiří Drahoš , Pavel Fischer and Marek Hilšer .
