House of Representatives in Czech Republic 2017
The 2017 parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic took place on October 20 and 21, 2017.
The ANO party around the agrochemical and media entrepreneur Andrej Babiš won in all constituencies and was by far the strongest party. Overall, right-wing populist and EU-skeptical parties gained a lot of votes, while left-wing parties or parties supporting deeper EU integration had to reckon with massive losses of votes, including the social democratic party ČSSD , the strongest party to date . The latter was unable to benefit from the economic boom and the low unemployment figures during her tenure and fell back to its worst result since 1992. The Communist Party KSČM had its worst result so far. The pirate party , the right-wing populist SPD and the mayor's party STAN were elected to the House of Representatives for the first time. A total of nine parliamentary groups moved into the House of Representatives, so that the media spoke of a fragmented parliament.
Electoral system
The House of Representatives is elected using proportional representation. There is a 5% threshold . The legislative period lasts 4 years.
Parties
The following parties have moved into the House of Representatives:
The Strana svobodných občanů ( Party of Free Citizens ) and the Strana zelených ( Party of the Greens ) failed to make it into the House of Representatives with 1.56% and 1.46% of the vote. There were a total of 31 lists to choose from.
Survey
The polls in the run-up to the election clearly saw ANO in first place between 25 and 30 percent. As a result, the party would significantly improve its result compared to 2013. The ČSSD was predicted to lose; Most of the opinion polls saw the Social Democrats just ahead of the communist KSČM in the lower double-digit range. Slight gains were forecast for the ODS, but a double-digit result seemed within the realms of possibility. In the last polls before the election, the pirates and the SPD, Tomio Okamura's party, made significant gains. For both of them the first entry into the Czech House of Representatives was considered likely. Shortly before the election, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09 and STAN were just above or below five percent, so that it was uncertain whether the parties would move in. The former would have to accept losses. The Greens, who were represented in the House of Representatives from 2006 to 2010, and the Svobodní party , which has had an EU parliamentarian since 2014, were given no chance of entering parliament.
