The presidential election in Slovenia 2017 took place on October 22, 2017 and November 12, 2017. 43.5 percent of those eligible to vote took part. Incumbent Borut Pahor , who was the favorite in the election, missed the necessary absolute majority in the first ballot with 47.1% of the votes ; the second placed Marjan Šarec received 25% of the vote. In the second ballot, Pahor received 53.1% of the vote. His rival candidate Šarec got 46.9%. The turnout was a record low of 42.1%.

Candidates

The incumbent President Pahor, elected to the Social Democrats in 2012 , ran as an independent candidate. The strongest challenger was Marjan Šarec , an actor and, as an independent politician, mayor of Kamnik . Candidates for the parliamentary opposition were Ljudmila Novak , leader of the Christian Democratic party New Slovenia , and Romana Tomc , European parliamentarian of the Slovenian Democratic Party . Education Minister Maja Makovec Brenčič stood for the liberal SMC , which provides the Prime Minister . Zmago Jelinčič , chairman of the nationalist SNS , also ran (as in the last two elections).

status

In Slovenia the President has largely representative tasks; he has no executive power. He proposes the Prime Minister. In addition, his opinion on important issues has a certain political weight.

Electoral system

The president is elected by the people in direct and secret ballot for a term of five years. A subsequent re-election is possible once. To be able to participate in the election, a candidate must be a Slovenian citizen. The election is advertised by the President of the State Assembly and must take place no later than 15 days before the expiry of the previous President's term of office. The candidate who receives an absolute majority of the votes is considered elected. If none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority of the votes, a run-off election must take place between the two candidates who received the most votes. This must take place within 21 days of the first ballot.
